Setup Public Key Encryption with pcANYWHERE

Generate the public and private keys

  1. Boot up Kirk if it isn't already and select Linux
  2. Start a command prompt.
  3. Type in
    telnet 192.168.10.5
  4. Login as pcanywhere with the password.
  5. Enter the IP address or PC name of the PC you are generating the certificate for. This should be unique among our customers.
  6. Then enter the password for hal on spock.
  7. Put in US for the country name.
  8. Put in New Jersey for the state name.
  9. Put in the city of the customer.
  10. Put in the customer's company.
  11. Put in Administration for the organizational unit.
  12. Put in the unique IP address or name of the PC you used above.
  13. Put in your email address.
  14. Just press Enter when prompted for the export password.
  15. This will create the certificates on the certs directory under \\spock\data.
  16. The p12 file goes onto the customer's PC. The p7b file goes on the HAL Systems PC.

Customer's PC

You will need the customer's p12 file and the p7b file for the HAL Systems PC.
  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. Create a certs directory in C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcANYWHERE.
  3. Copy the p12 and p7b files to the certs directory.
  4. Double click on the p12 file to import it.
  5. Next to where it asks you for a password. Check the box that says "Mark the private key as exportable." Click Next.
  6. Select Place all certificates in the following store. Click on the Browse button and select Personal. Click OK. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Go to the pcANYWHERE directory and run machkey.exe. Select the key with the unique name or IP address and click "Copy to Machine Store". Close MachKey.
  9. Copy certcons.exe from the pcANYWHERE directory to the certs directory.
  10. Start a Command prompt. Type
    cd "\program files\symantec\pcanywhere\certs\"
    certcons pca.store name.p7b
    where name.p7b is the name of the HAL Systems p7b file. Exit the command prompt.
  11. Start pcANYWHERE and right click on the Host icon you are running. Click Properties.
  12. Click on the "Security Options" tab. Change the Encryption level to "Public Key". Check "Deny lower encryption level".
  13. Click on the "Public Key Encryption Wizard". Click Next. Select the key with the unique name and click Next.
  14. Click the Browse button and browse to the C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcANYWHERE\Certs\pca.store file. Click Next.
  15. Click Finish. Click OK.
  16. Start the pcANYWHERE Host.

HAL Systems PC

You will need the customer's p7b file.
  1. Start Windows Explorer. Copy the customer's p7b file to C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcANYWHERE\Certs.
  2. Start a Command prompt. Type
    cd "\program files\symantec\pcanywhere\certs\"
    certcons pca.store name.p7b
    where name.p7b is the name of the customer's p7b file. Exit the command prompt.
  3. Start pcANYWHERE. Right click on the remote icon for the customer and select Properties.
  4. Click on the "Security Options" tab. Change the Encryption level to "Public Key".
  5. Click on the "Public Key Encryption Wizard". Click Next. Select the key with the unique name and click Next.
  6. Click the Browse button and browse to the C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcANYWHERE\Certs\pca.store file. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish. Click OK.
  8. Start the remote session.
